Trish Formoy, a friend and former colleague of Sue's at Leicester High School for Girls, wrote in the summer of 2017: “I cannot run marathons but I can play golf, so four rounds of golf in one day was how I chose to raise money for Women’s Aid, a charity who provide free, confidential specialist support and an advocacy service to victims of domestic abuse, regardless of age, cultural identity or sexuality. Women’s Aid also provide safe and secure refuges to house victims in urgent need of a safe place to stay. I did this in support of my friend Sue Hills from Tur Langton, whose daughter, Alice Ruggles, a former pupil of mine, was murdered by an ex-boyfriend in October 2016.

“I raised in excess of £1600. On Friday 30th June, I started off at 5.45 a.m. In total, I took 383 shots and 40,000 steps, played 72 holes and walked 20 miles, finally sitting down in the 19th, (or should that be 73rd?) at 6.30 p.m.

“The atmosphere on the day was tremendous. I was touched by the support I received, from all at Kibworth Golf Club and from friends, golfers and non-golfers alike. The pro-shop, staff and caterers ran sweepstakes, spread my message and fed me, and friends caddied for me and brought me flapjacks. Golfers around the course spotted our eye-catching cerise Women’s Aid tee-shirts and stopped us to donate.

“Sue and other colleagues from Leicester High School (pictured) came down to join in the fun. One friend decided that a caddying uniform as worn at the The Masters was required, so dressed up in a hazmat suit with my name on it. As Sue said, Alice would have loved it all and she would have been the one larking around in the caddie’s outfit.”
